Bone Marrow Biopsy and Aspiration

Pain Preparation and How Bone Marrow Biopsy Is Done?

The pain experienced after biopsy is temporary, average and lower than expected. Research show that the pain is related to the duration and difficulty of a biopsy. However, this pain is greatly reduced when an experienced doctor uses less than 10 minutes to complete the biopsy.

This test is usually done in your doctor’s office, a clinic or hospital. It is done by doctor that specializes in blood disorders or cancer such as hematologist or an oncologist. The biopsy is done in 10 minutes.

You will be asked to wear a hospital gown and your heart rate and blood pressure will be checked. You will sit on your side or lie on your stomach. A local anesthesia is administered to numb the site of the biopsy (ridge of your rear hip bone). You may feel a small sting as the small needle is inserted. After the test, your doctor will apply pressure to the site to prevent any bleeding and then bandage the area.
