Bone Marrow Biopsy and Aspiration

How to Get Ready for a Bone Marrow Biopsy

The first thing to do when preparing for bone marrow biopsy is to tell your doctor about any issues. Your doctor must know about the following:

  • Any drugs or supplements you are using
  • Your medical history, especially if you have ever had a bleeding disorder
  • If you are pregnant or you think might be
  • Any allergies or sensitivities to tape, anesthesia or other substances
  • If you experience anxiety about the tests and need drugs to help you stay calm.

Experts advise people to come with a family member or a friend to give emotional support. You must not drive after using any drug that makes you feel sleepy. Follow your doctor’s advice before the test. Your doctor may tell you to stop taking a certain drug before the test.

Adequate rest is also necessary, so show up early to your appointment with your doctor before the test.
