Leukemia and Bleeding Gums: Link, Prevention, and Treatment

Other oral symptoms of leukemia

There are other oral symptoms that people with Leukemia may experience, such as:

  • Bleeding in the mouth, which may affect the lips, tongue, or cheeks
  • Pale gums or overall paleness in the mouth
  • Swollen or painful gums
  • Overgrowth if gum tissue around the teeth, which may cause a change in the shape or size of the teeth
  • Sore or injury in the mouth

These symptoms are usually due to destruction of blood cells and changes in the blood.

Even the treatment of leukemia can cause certain risks. For example, as much as chemotherapy targets cancer cells, they can also kill healthy cells. Consequently, a person’s body and immune system may weaken, and they may develop mouth issues relating to chemotherapy, such as frequent infections and mouth sores.

People with leukemia should take extra caution to prevent oral infections that may result in pain and sores in the mouth.
