Autoimmune Liver Diseases

Autoimmune liver diseases happens in the condition that the liver is attacked by human body’s immune system, leading to liver inflammation, which eventually may cause liver cirrhosis, or even lead to liver cancer and liver failure.
Autoimmune hepatitis [5] is one of the most common autoimmune liver diseases, known as a chronic inflammation and caused by a reaction by the body’s defense cells, which start attacking the liver, affecting the functioning of this organ. This disease usually is asymptomatic. People with autoimmune hepatitis often have abdominal pains, fatigue, joint pains or nausea.
This type of hepatitis appears more commonly in women before the age of 30, and the cause is not yet well defined, but it is probably related to genetic alterations. The main treatment is to suppress the overactive immune system.
