What Causes Cirrhosis of the Liver

Chronic Cholestasis

Cholestasis [6] is a condition in which bile cannot be carried from the liver to a part of the intestine, which may be due to obstruction of the bile ducts due to the presence of tumors, gallbladder stones, or because of deficient bile production. What’s more, bile is produced by liver and plays an important role in food digestion, especially the fats. Once bile flow is obstructed or altered, it will cause bilirubin buildup, leading to disorders of bile duct, pancreas and liver.

Chronic cholestasis can lead to liver cirrhosis and is more common in people who have ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory bowel disease. Drug-induced liver is the main cause of chronic cholestasis. Some diseases also can cause cholestasis, such as viral infections, bacterial infections, genetic disorders, etc.

The primary treatment is to remove the underlying causes. Not abusing alcohol, getting hepatitis vaccination and avoiding the usage of recreational intravenous drugs are effective to reduce the risk of getting cholestasis.
