Stiff Neck
A stiff neck may be caused by muscle or ligament strains. It may also be caused by a range of medical conditions. Some, like meningitis, can be life-threatening. Stiff neck caused by meningitis makes it very difficult and painful to turn the head. In some cases, the neck, head and spine become arched and rigid. This condition, known as opisthotonos, is more likely to occur in children and infants.
A stiff neck is a symptom of many kinds of problems so it is not always easy to know if the one you have is caused by meningitis. You should watch out for other symptoms that may accompany an infection. See your doctor if you suspect you have meningitis.
