Anxiety in College: What to Know and How to Cope

How to Cope with Anxiety in College

Take Comfort from New Friends

Finding a friend who is going through the same emotions as you can give you support. Reading that you’re not alone is one thing. When you’re a freshman or starting at a new institution, that could seem frightening and easier said than done. But even if they don’t express it, you can be sure that others are experiencing it if you are, too.

“Remember that you’re not the only person experiencing anxiety [3] about finding your place in a new institution or university. Everyone else is also beginning from scratch. Even while some may put on a brave face, most people are uneasy.” Hafeez says. If so, you might want to consider pledging a sorority or fraternity, joining a few clubs, or volunteering at school functions or on campus.

To avoid potentially escalating your anxiety, make sure to look for friends who share your passions and principles. Take your time getting to know people, and exercise patience. Out of a need to belong, avoid toxic people or users, advises Hafeez. The harm caused by these people outweighs the temporary solitude, in my opinion.

Finding people that are compatible with you might take time, so don’t get disheartened if it’s taking longer than you anticipated it would.
