Emotional Blunting – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and More

Treatment for Emotional Blunting

As earlier stated this condition is not a mental health problem.it is mostly a symptom of other underlying health or mental problems. Therefore, there is no specific treatment. However, there are certain lifestyle changes accompanied by supervision of a mental healthcare professional that help this feeling of numbness, such as:

  • Medication adjustments: some medications, especially antidepressants, cause this condition.in order to manage this feeling of dullness, make sure to consult your doctor for ways to adjust the usage of this medication. The healthcare professional will be able to reduce the dosage, direct you on the proper way to stop the drug or help to prescribe a less active antidepressant.
  • Psychotherapy [4]: This is a form of talk therapy. Talking to a professional therapist may help you avoid triggers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) . This therapy will also help you to correct little signs of emotional blunting.
  • Support group: it is advised to join a support group of people with similar conditions. This will help you meet and relate with different people, thereby learning from them the steps they took to better their conditions.
  • Go back to activities you enjoy: Going back to activities that once made you feel positive and happy is a good way to improve the feeling of emotional dullness. At first, the positive feeling may not occur but as time goes on, the feeling of happiness is regained.
  • Stay away from substance use: the use of hard substances are major causes of this condition. It is hereby advised to stay away from such activities.
  • Journals: writing out activities that cause happiness or sadness helps one to remember past memories which helps to trigger the release of positive or negative emotions as the case may be.
  • Stimulate your senses: cuddling a stuffed pet or taking a cold shower or eating a spicy food may also help awaken other senses and reduce the feeling of numbness.
  • Eat well-nourished meals that make you happy.
  • Exercise Regularly: aerobic activities [5] help to relieve stress by releasing some hormones. This helps to take your mind off the flashbacks of past trauma and causes a feeling of peace.
  • Stay close to your loved ones either your close family or friends.
