Treatment for catatonia

Treatment for catatonia can only be gotten from a professional medical practitioner and the first treatment usually administered is a sedative called benzodiazepine that’s often used to ease anxiety. Other medication like muscle relaxants and in some cases tricyclic antidepressants.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
This is another treatment option for catatonia. This therapy is done in the hospital under medical supervision. The person is usually sedated for the procedure, a special machine delivers electric shock to the brain. This induces a seizure in the brain for some time. The seizure is believed to cause changes in the amounts of neurotransmitters in the brain. This can improve catatonia symptoms. Although this procedure is only done if other treatment options do not work.
Catatonia is a very severe health condition that requires the doctor’s attention immediately. The earlier the treatment the faster one recovers, which is why it is advised to immediately see you doctor if you start to experience any of the symptoms.
