How is catatonia diagnosed?

There is no definitive test for catatonia however a physical exam and testing is conducted to rule out other conditions. Some of the ways in which catatonia is diagnosed include:

  • The use of BFCRS

Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS) is the most common test carried out to diagnose catatonia. The scale when used gives a rating of 0 to 3. A “0” rating implies the symptom is absent. A “3” rating means the symptom is present.

  • Blood test

Blood test is also carried out, it can help to rule out electrolyte imbalances . These can cause changes in mental function. With a blood test you can know if there is pulmonary embolism or blood clot in the lungs, as this can lead to catatonia symptoms.

  • CT or MRI scans

This allow the doctor to view the brain so as to rule out the possibility of a brain tumor or swelling.
