Diagnosis

To be diagnosed with PTSD, a person must have experienced those symptoms listed above for at least a month or more. [12]
Diagnosis of PTSD is made when an individual has:
- Experienced traumatic events directly or indirectly.
- Had symptoms continued for over a month.
- Had symptoms that cause serious distress or are a major obstacle to daily activities.
- There are several categories of symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (i.e., invasive symptoms, avoidance symptoms, adverse effects on thinking and mood, changes in alertness levels and responses).
The diagnostic process also confirms that the symptoms may be due to medication or other illnesses.
