What are the risk factors?

Separation anxiety usually occurs after the loss of a loved one or when you leave home for a long period. Also, you are more susceptible to adult separation anxiety disorder if you were clinically diagnosed with it as a child. People who grew up with overly involved parents may also be prone to the disorder.
People with the following disorders may also experience adult separation anxiety disorder:
- Social anxiety disorder
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Personality disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
