Separation Anxiety in Adults: Symptoms, Treatment, and Mmore

Diagnosis

Your healthcare provider will recommend a simple test and use guidelines stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to diagnose your separation anxiety disorder. The first sign stated in the manual is the feeling of extreme fear or anxiety of being away from people you care about. Fear and anxiety may prevent you from concentrating or focusing during activities.

You must meet the following criteria to be diagnosed with the condition:

  • Your symptoms must be present for at least six months
  • The symptoms must be so severe that they stop you from engaging in social activities.
  • Your symptoms do not point towards another disorder.

Your doctor will ask you numerous questions to know if you meet the requirements for this diagnosis. You may also need to meet a therapist before getting diagnosed. Your doctor may speak to family members or close friends to help them know the effects of the condition on your lifestyle. They will seek your permission before speaking to a family member.
