Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation is an invasive procedure and it requires brain surgery. It is recommended when medications are not helping to treat your symptoms. Tests are usually carried out to make sure you are fit for the surgery.
Under general anesthesia, two holes are drilled in your skull to reach a particular part of your brain. In this part of your brain, two electrodes are placed on either side. Another surgery is taken on your chest wall to implant a generator. After the generator has been implanted, a wire is attached to the electrodes in your brain and connected to the generator. After some time, the generator is activated and it is allowed to send electrical impulses to the electrodes in your brain.
You can allow the generator to keep sending electrical impulses. You can also switch it off at any time. This surgery comes with some side effects which include:
- Confusion
- Lightheadedness [6]
- Infection
