What Causes Depression?

Substance Abuse

If you have a drug or alcohol problem, you’re at a higher risk of depression. Drug and alcohol misuse can cause feelings of euphoria that often seem to make you feel better. The reality is that it worsens depression. This is most evident when the high wears off.

Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that about 21 percent of adults who struggle with substance abuse had a major depressive episode in 2018. [8] According to a 2012 study, 63.8 percent of alcohol dependent people also have depression. [9] It is important to treat both substance abuse and depression synchronously because both situations often feed into each other.
