When the mother and child were reunited, Spitz discovered via her research, the infant rapidly turned cheerful and chatty. In certain instances, Spitz also observed a noticeable increase in the baby’s development in addition to this abrupt transformation.

Spitz also investigated another institution where moms and babies who had been separated were not reunited. Instead of a joyful homecoming, Spitz described a progressive syndrome that became permanent after the 3-month developmental critical point and even resulted in the death of nearly a third of the infants.
