According to the DSM-5, the diagnostic requirement for people who experience bipolar disorder with mixed episode include:
- At least three hypomanic or manic symptoms during a main depressive episode
- At least three depressive symptoms during a hypomanic or manic once bipolar disorder is diagnosed, a clinician may add a specifier like “with mixed features,” depending on the reported mood episodes and symptoms.
After your bipolar disorder is diagnosed, you healthcare provider may add a specifier, such as “with mixed episodes.” The symptoms and changes in mood that accompany your bipolar disorder will determine which specifier your doctor adds.
