Common risk factors for developing bipolar disorder with mixed episodes

Bipolar disorders are linked to certain risk factors. The risk factors for bipolar disorders [5] with mixed episodes are unknown.
According to studies, children are more susceptible to having bipolar disorder if they have a close relative with bipolar disorder and:
- A severe depressive episode with manic symptoms
- Mixture of ADHD [6] and mood fluctuation
- A subsyndromal type of bipolar disorder
Experts are yet to find a neurobiological risk factor for bipolar disorder. Other types of risk factor include:
- A traumatic event or major life change
- Drug misuse
- Certain parts of brain structure and development, like hypothalamus, hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex
