Botox (Botulinum Toxin)

Botox is an injectable drug that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which temporarily weakens and paralyzes the muscles. Although Botox is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, it is also an effective treatment for certain medical conditions such as chronic migraine.
Its Effectiveness
Studies comparing Botox to a placebo and also comparing it to other prophylactic treatments have proven its effectiveness in preventing migraine headaches. Results show that Botox is able to reduce headache frequency by roughly two headaches per month.
Its Side Effects
Common side effects of using Botox include eyelid drooping, muscle weakness, pain in the neck, and injection site pain. Botox, as a treatment for migraine, is most effective after 4 weeks.
