Causes of migraine with aura

The exact cause of aura is still not understood. It is believed to be caused by a wave of electrical activity that spreads across the cortex of the brain. Doctors believe that this wave causes prolonged suppression of nerve cell activity. This can cause some changes in blood flow, thereby leading to migraine symptoms. An aura may also be triggered by the same thing that triggers migraine attacks without aura. These includes:
- Lack of sufficient sleep
- Stress or anxiety
- Too much consumption of alcohol or caffeine
- Too much of certain foods such as chocolate, cured meat, and aged cheeses
- Missing or not having regular meals
- Vigorous exercise
- Hormonal changes like during menstruation
- Certain medications
- Changes in weather
- Food additives like aspartame or MSG
- Loud noises, bright light, or strong smells
