More on the Common Symptoms of Migraine

Prodrome Stage

A day or two before a migraine, an individual may experience little changes that serve as warning signs of an oncoming migraine. Examples of these symptoms are constipation, mood changes, neck stiffness, increased taste and urination, constant yawning, and food cravings.

Aura Stage

In migraine with aura, the aura happens after the prodrome stage. Please note that auras are irreversible symptoms of the nervous system. During an aura, individuals may have issues with vision, movement, speech, and sensation.

Each symptom starts slowly and develops over time, thereby lasting for 20 to 60 minutes. Some examples of these problems include temporal loss of vision, problems speaking clearly, feeling a tingling sensation on the face, legs and arms, images of shapes, bright spots, or light flashes. In some cases, individuals may experience hearing loss or music.

Attack Stage

This phase is called the attack stage. Besides, this phase is the most severe or acute [3] of the other two phases (prodrome). The actual migraine pain occurs in this specific phase. In some individuals, this can occur during an aura. In the attack phase, the symptoms can occur around a few hours to days. The symptoms of a migraine can vary from person to person. These migraines can occur a few times or many times in a month. Here are the symptoms:

  • Increased sensitivity to sound and light
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Pain on the side of the head (light, right, front, or backside)
  • Vomiting
  • Pulsing or throbbing [4] head pain

When referring to the common symptoms of migraine, it’s usually described as the attack stage symptoms. Primarily, this is because the attack phase is considered the primary phase.

Postdrome Stage

After the attack phase, the next phase makes the individual feel confused, drained and washed out for up to a day. Generally, this phase causes changes in mood and feelings. Some people may feel euphoric, delighted, apathetic, and very tired. During this phase, a mild headache may persist. Engaging in a sudden head movement can bring about pain.
