What Causes Ocular Migraines?

Changes in nerves and blood vessels

This is the most prevalent explanation for why ocular migraines occur. According to the World Health Organization, it is likely that migraine headaches begin deep inside the brain [5], triggered by the release of inflammatory chemicals that cause pain. These chemicals are secreted around the blood vessels and nerve cells in the brain, resulting in migraines.

Imaging studies have corroborated this theory to some extent. Changes in blood flow to the brain happen during ocular migraine episodes. It is not clear why this happens. Scientists also don’t understand the mechanism behind the resolution of vision loss that happens within a short period.
