What Causes Ocular Migraines?

Genetics

Migraine headaches usually have genetic causes [6]. If you have a family history of ocular migraines, your chances of developing it are higher than the average person. The Migraine Research Foundation estimates that up to 90 percent [7] of people who have migraine disorders also have family members with similar conditions. According to some studies, children with one parent who suffers from migraines have a 50 percent [8] risk of also suffering from it. For those who have two parents with migraines, the percentage goes up to 75 [9].

The genes responsible for ocular migraines aren’t known yet. DNA differences [10] between people are unlikely to cause migraines directly. Instead, they alter how the body functions in subtle ways. A combination of these small changes increases your predisposition to migraines.
