15 Questions to Ask Your Periodontist About Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Without understanding what dental implants are, it would be impossible to know what to expect from the procedure. A dental implant is not a tooth. It is a prosthetic device (like a prosthetic limb or hand) that is used to replace a missing tooth. The physician dental implant is a material made from titanium that is placed into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth. After the implant is inserted, you will be given a healing period after which a single cap (or crown), partial or full denture, or a fixed bridge will be attached.

When the implant heals completely and joins the bone on your jaw, your dentist will insert an abutment to the implant to give room for the insertion of the artificial tooth. There will be three parts to the dental implant when the whole process is done: the dental implant fixture, the abutment, and the artificial tooth. The abutment and crown may be created as one piece. Dentures can demand adjacent teeth. This is why the implant fixture is surgically implanted into your jaw, so it will not make any noise or slip.
