15 Questions to Ask Your Periodontist About Dental Implants

What Can I Eat After Having Dental Implants?

In most cases, the surgical procedure for dental implants involves creating an opening in your gums where the fixture will be inserted. This opening must be kept clean through the procedure. It must also be free of food debris while it is healing to reduce your risk of any infection. Like other surgical procedures or extraction in the mouth, you may have to drink liquids and take soft foods for the first two days after the operation. For instance, your doctor may tell you to drink smoothies (without fruit seeds) and milkshakes. You may also have to consume only soft foods, such as mashed potato, pudding, ice cream, smooth soups, and yogurts. You may start to eat foods that require lots of chewing, such as soft sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, eggs, and cooked noodles.

It is important to avoid seeded, crunchy, or hard foods such as hamburgers, fresh berries, popcorn, or pizza. Your healthcare provider may also advise you to avoid acidic or spicy foods, because they can result in irritation in your incision location. Some people may resume a regular diet after a few days to one week without feeling any discomfort or difficulties.
