Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

The resin of the Boswellia tree is used to make frankincense essential oil [3]. It’s also referred to as olibanum.

According to studies, frankincense possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It is believed to do this by preventing the function of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that releases leukotrienes, which causes pain and inflammation. Compounds called leukotrienes cause inflammation in the body.

In order to alleviate pain and inflammation, myrrh and frankincense essential oils are combined in China.

It has been shown that frankincense contains antibacterial characteristics that make it advantageous for preventing cavities and gum disease when taken in an oral preparation.
