Canker Sore – Treatment and Causes

Smoking & Trigger Foods

You have stopped smoking [10] and have found that you are developing more ulcers than normal.
It is a totally normal symptom that affects 2 out of 5 people who quit smoking in the first few months, along with frequent coughs, sneezes and sore throats.
Fortunately, these symptoms will become less frequent after 6 weeks.

Are you a fruit lover or spicy addict? Get ready for some bad news. Some patients have reported that spicy food and acidic fruits such as tomatoes, oranges, pineapples, apples, and strawberries, are triggers for mouth ulcers.
If you suffer from this often enough, we recommend keeping your diet diary for a few weeks to see if a particular food is the trigger.
Canker sores react very badly to a certain type of food [11]. To prevent development of sores, avoid ingesting:

    • Spicy or very spicy foods
    • Salty foods, like some snacks, peanuts or chips
    • Citrus or acidic fruits, such as oranges, lemons and strawberries
    • Too hard food, like toast or nuts
    • Hot food or drinks (like coffee)
    • Soft drinks (because of white sugar)
    • Chocolate
