Dysgeusia: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments and More

Diagnosis

The diagnostic evaluation of dysgeusia is based on determining whether the patient has an altered sense of taste. There are plenty diagnostic tests that can be used to measure taste. Some tests involve measuring the response upon the exposure to certain tastes. You may need one or more of the following diagnostic tests to evaluate the sensitivity of the taste buds:

  • Taste-threshold strength
  • Taste-suprathreshold test
  • Taste-quadrant test
  • Flavor discrimination test
  • Electrogustometry
  • Gustatory event potentials

If the alteration in taste is related to a nose problem, there will be the following diagnostic tests:

  • The pocket smell test
  • The brief smell identification test
  • The university of Connecticut test battery
  • University of Pennsylvania smell identification test (UPSIT) or “sniffin’ sticks”
