Mosquito Bite on Lips: Treatments & Prevention

Risks of Mosquito Bite on Your Lips

The two greatest possible risks of a mosquito bite on the lips are illness and infection. Another possible risk is an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva after a bite.

Diseases that Mosquitoes Transmit

Bites from mosquitoes can cause more harm than merely itchiness. Infectious mosquitoes can spread illnesses like:

  • Malaria: South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are where it is most prevalent. Each year, the United States reports about 2,000 cases of malaria, mostly in travelers returning from these areas. [2]
  • West Nile Virus: North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and West Asia are all frequent locations for this illness. [3]
  • Zika virus: Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and South America are all typical locations for it. In North America, however, there have also been occurrences of the Zika virus. [4]
  • Chikungunya virus: Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe are where this virus is most prevalent. [5]
  • Dengue infection: Tropical Asia and the Caribbean are where this disease is most frequently found. [6]

Not every person bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease will experience symptoms. Call your doctor if you are worried, even if you don’t have any symptoms.
