Causes of Perioral dermatitis

The exact cause of this inflammation is unknown. However, it has been traced to solid topical steroids, which may be prescribed to treat another condition. Nasal sprays containing corticosteroids [2] may also result in Perioral dermatitis, so can inhaled steroids.

Perioral dermatitis may also result from skin reactions to certain cosmetics or personal care products. Heavy skin creams that contain petroleum jelly or a paraffin base may also cause or worsen this condition.

Other potential cause of Perioral dermatitis includes:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Dysfunction of the epidermal barrier
  • Issues with the immune system
  • Candida albicans [3]
  • Demodex mites [4]
  • Bacterial infection
  • Fluoride
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
