What Is The Difference between Gingivitis and Periodontitis?

How Does Gingivitis Develop to Periodontitis?

Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is not treated. Plaques begin to build up and move to the gumline. The plaque contains bacteria that can release harmful substances and inflame the gums. This leads to a severe inflammatory response in the body, which affects the gum cells and bones that make the teeth strong. This causes periodontitis.

As the gums degrade, they move away from the teeth, making gum pockets. These pockets become infected by bacteria leading to more tissue damage. The gum spaces can get deeper due to tissue damage. In some cases, deeper spaces may imply difficulties in reaching the bacteria when you floss and brush.
