Nosebleeds (Epistaxis): Causes, Remedies & Prevention

Stopping Nosebleed

Follow these instructions to stop a nosebleed at home.

  • Lean your head and torso slightly forward while sitting erect. This will stop blood from staying in your throat, thereby preventing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. (Avoid flat lying or placing your head between your legs)
  • Use your Louth to breathe
  • To catch the blood, use a tissue or a wet washcloth
  • Pinch the soft area of your nose together with your thumb and index finger. In order to create the bridge of your nose, be careful to press the soft portion of your nose against the hard bone ridge. You can’t stop the bleeding by applying pressure at or above the bony portion of your nose.
  • After at least five minutes of continuous pinching, check to see if the bleeding has stopped. Continue squeezing your nose for an additional 10 minutes if your nose is still bleeding
  • If you’d like, place an ice pack on the bridge of your nose to increase comfort and further help blood vessels shrink (which will halt the bleeding). Although it’s not required, you can try this step
  • You can apply pressure to your nose after spraying an over-the-counter decongestant spray, [3]such as oxymetazoline (Afrin®, Dristan®, Neo-Synephrine®, or Vicks Sinex®), into the side of your nose that is bleeding. These topical decongestant sprays shouldn’t be used continuously. This could increase the likelihood of getting a nosebleed
