Treatment Options for Sinusitis(Sinus Infection)

Inflammation of the membrane of any of the paranasal sinuses is referred to as sinus infection or sinusitis [1]. acute sinusitis may result from damage to the nose and paranasal sinuses, post-surgery, the curvature of the nasal septum, presence of a foreign body in the nasal cavity, fungal infection, allergic reaction, impaired immunity, etc., which leads to a deterioration in the condition with this disease.

An acute and chronic type of sinusitis is known. The period of acute sinusitis is usually about 2 months. A longer duration of the inflammatory response in the nasal sinuses or repeated recurrence of sinusitis characterizes the chronic form.

Acute sinusitis is characterized by severe swelling of the mucous membrane, difficulty breathing, and passing mucus. Nasal discharge is dominated by a large number of leukocytes that fight infection.

As a rule, bacterial flora [2] is present in the nasal secretions. Therefore, if the necessary treatment is not carried out, serious complications can arise.

Chronic sinusitis occurs with less severe symptoms. This form of the disease occurs due to the transition from the acute form in cases where the patient does not comply with the prescribed treatment regimen. Chronic sinusitis is characterized by frequent manifestations of the disease, and also has a longer course.

Principles of Treatment

For acute sinusitis, treatment is based on the following principles:

    • elimination of signs of edema in the sinuses, as well as restoration of mucus discharge;
    • removal of the inflammatory process, as well as the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms;
    • Preventing the development of complications of acute sinusitis, as well as restoring and strengthening the protective functions of the body by taking immunostimulating drugs.
