Medication for Acute Sinusitis

Antibiotics [3] are the cornerstone of sinus inflammation treatment. The following are used: amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, cephalosporins, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones. Effective treatment of acute sinusitis also involves taking the following medications:

      • Broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed in order to destroy the pathogen, as well as fight the inflammatory process. Antihistamines are indicated for bacterial sinusitis with signs of an allergic reaction, they dry out the mucous membrane and relieve swelling.
      • Vasoconstrictor agents are used to ease breathing and relieve mucosal edema. But at the same time, do not forget that prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drugs can be addictive to them. Decongestants [4] that last no longer than 5 days in the form of drops or nasal sprays; these medications constrict capillaries, alleviate mucosal edema, and establish conditions for the discharge of sinus pathological contents;
      • Anti-allergic agents are prescribed in cases where acute sinusitis develops against the background of allergic reactions [5] to any irritant. These drugs help to quickly get rid of swelling and restore nasal breathing.
      • The use of glucocorticoid-based sprays, which reduce inflammation, is appropriate in chronic sinusitis (except for the odontogenic variant); it should be recommended by a doctor.
      • Pain relievers, such as NSAIDs
