Early Symptoms of Scleroderma

Changes in the Coloration of the Skin (Raynaud’s Phenomenon)

Frequent manifestations of the disease include Raynaud’s phenomenon, [4] in which, as a result of the spasm of small blood vessels, the fingers and toes change their color. The three-phase nature of this phenomenon is classically described; in the first phase the fingers turn pale, in the second they turn blue, and in the concluding phase, they turn red. But in real life, such a strict sequence may not be observed. The provoking factor is usually exposure to cold, [5] and sometimes also, emotional stress.

Raynaud’s phenomenon is sometimes severe, with the appearance of ulcers or gangrene of the fingers as a result of lack of blood supply.
