Causes and Risk Factors of Sepsis

Invasive Devices like Intravenous Catheters or Breathing Tubes

In some procedures, the invasive devices are contaminated. The contamination of these devices increases the risk of infection. The infection from the invasive device leads to sepsis and septic shock. Examples of some infections that result from invasive devices include urinary tract infections, influenza, and more.

Note that there are different types of invasive devices. Significant types include the urinary catheters, intravenous lines, PICC lines, central lines, nephrostomy tubes, gastrostomy tubes, traction pins, defibrillators, traction pins, and defibrillators.

Most invasive devices only cause infections when they provide a route for fungi or bacteria to enter the body. During insertion of the device, the health professional should maintain a sterile field. After the insertion of invasive devices, the region should be kept clean to avoid bacteria or fungi.
