Pitted Acne Scars – Causes and Treatment Options

Causes

It is important to note that not all acne leads to scars. According to research, scarring occurs in 95 percent of people with acne. So, it is a common condition. The tendency of an acne spot to lead to a scar depends on various factors, such as the healing tendencies, if you’ve been squeezing or picking the acne, and the type of acne. Experts say that the main factor that determines the appearance of a scar is Inflammation. People with inflamed, deeper cysts and modules are more susceptible to scars than people with blackheads and whiteheads.

The inflammation caused by this acne damages the skin and triggers the wound healing process. As a result, the synthesis of a protein called collagen and a pigment called melanin is increased. Increased production of melanin can lead to hyperpigmentation or dark marks. Also, excess production of collagen can result in different scarring.  Some people are more prone to scarring than others because they don’t heal properly. Their skin releases excess collagen fibers that drag the skin inwards forming depressed atrophic acne scars. Increased production of collagen can result in a “bump” on the skin, known as a keloid scar. [1]
