Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation

Memory loss

The brain needs copious amounts of sleep to function well. It performs multiple functions including the storage of memory while you sleep. Committing something to memory often follows three steps [5]: acquisition, consolidation, and recall. Consolidation requires sleep to take place. Not getting enough sleep can impair this process and prevent recall, which happens when you’re awake.

If you do not get enough sleep, you might experience blind spots in your memory during the day. Facts you remembered so clearly the previous night might be wiped from your memory by morning.

Insomnia is a condition marked by difficulty falling or staying asleep. It is a well-known cause of daytime cognitive impairments, including memory loss [6]. Another study by researchers at the University of California, Berkley, found that poor sleep can significantly impair memory function [7] and cause brain deterioration, especially among older people.
