8 Signs and Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS)

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common symptom of irritable bowel syndrome. There are multiple types of irritable bowel syndrome. Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome is one of the top three and accounts for one-third [4] of all cases. Diarrhea features in all types of irritable bowel syndrome, but it is worse in people with this type.

In one study [5] with 200 adults, those who had diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome had an average of 12 bowel movements every week. This is double the number in those without diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

Diarrhea in people with irritable bowel syndrome happens because the gut muscles contract more than they need to. Normal bowel movement is controlled by a rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the gut muscles. Bowel movement may become sudden and accelerated when this rhythm is disrupted, leading to diarrhea.

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome tends to be watery and may contain mucus [6]. It is bloodless, so if you notice blood in your stool, you should see a doctor immediately. You may be dealing with a different problem.
