Gas and Gas Pains: Diagnosis & Treatment

Symptoms of Intestinal Gas and Possible Complications of Intestinal Gas

Gas symptoms vary depending on the cause. However, some typical symptoms of intestinal gas include:

  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Flatulence (farting)

Signs that indicate you have an intestinal gas problem

It is best that you contact your doctor or healthcare provider if you experience gas along with:

  • Fever [5]
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea [6]
  • Vomiting
  • Chronic or sudden onset of diarrhea
  • Rectal bleeding, bloody stool or fatty stool (yellow, greasy-looking and foul-smelly)
  • Unexplained weight loss

Although excess gas can be painful, uncomfortable, and embarrassing, it’s typically not a major health issue. However, gas accumulation can occasionally feel more concerning. Chest pain that may be mistaken for a heart attack can be caused by gas on the left side of the intestines. Pain from gallstones or appendicitis can be mistaken for gas accumulation on the right side. If there is any concerning underlying explanation for these symptoms, a health professional should investigate.
