Gastroparesis – Symptoms, Complications & Diagnosis

Possible Complications of Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis may lead to the development of different complications [10]; some of them are listed here;

Severe dehydration: Continual vomiting can lead to dehydration due to the constant loss of body fluid.

Malnutrition: You may not be getting enough calories as a result of poor appetite, or you may not be able to get enough nutrients from foods in the intestine due to the fact that they are vomited before nutrients are properly absorbed.

Hardening of undigested food that remains in the stomach: Undigested food left in the stomach may become hardened and form a rock-solid mass in the stomach referred to as bezoar [11]. These solid mass may lead to nausea and vomiting, as well as can be very detrimental to health and cause death if they do not allow the passage of food into the small intestine.

Unpredictable changes in blood sugar: Although gastroparesis does not cause [12] diabetes, repeated alteration in the level and volume of food reaching the small intestine can result in drastic variations in the level of blood sugar. Because of this constant alteration in the level of sugar in the blood, diabetes can become worse. Conversely, the inability to control blood sugar worsens gastroparesis.

Decreased quality of life: Acute exacerbation of symptoms in gastroparesis can make life difficult for you to function and fulfill your responsibilities.
