Strep Throat Management and Treatment

Quit Smoking

Many chemicals and substances irritate the windpipe, including cigarette and other tobacco smoke. When you’re suffering from strep throat, it is advisable to quit smoking because nicotine and the other chemicals present in cigarettes and cigars may cause severe health complications in the respiratory tract. It could also worsen symptoms of strep throat. [6]

While smoking may not directly cause strep throat, it makes the body susceptible to health conditions that can cause respiratory infections because the harmful chemicals weaken the immune system, increasing the risks of infections and diseases. [7]

Antacids

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common cause of strep throat. It is a condition in which acid from the stomach backs up from the stomach into the esophagus, irritating the airways.

The acid burns the esophagus and throat, causing symptoms like heartburn and acid reflux. Antacids are a group of medications that help neutralize stomach acids, preventing reflux, heartburn, and other related conditions.[8]
