Uremia: Causes, Symptoms, Complications & Treatments

What Are the Causes of Uremia?

Uremia occurs due to severe and irreversible damage to your kidneys. It commonly occurs as a symptom of chronic kidney disease. The kidneys lose their ability to filter the blood and remove waste from your body via your urine. The waste and toxic substances accumulate in your bloodstream, resulting in a potentially fatal condition.

Causes of chronic kidney disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Polycystic kidney disease [3]
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Diabetes (both type 1 and 2) [4]
  • Inflammation of the filtering units in the kidneys called glomeruli
  • Kidney infections that recur
  • Inflammation of the kidney’s tubules and the structures around them
  • Some types of cancer
  • Kidney stones [5] that block the urinary tract for a prolonged period of time
