How Is Uremia Diagnosed?

To diagnose uremia, your doctor will
- Monitor your symptoms
- Perform a physical exam
- Review your health history, especially your family history and kidney health
- Study the lab tests mentioned above. Creatinine and BUN blood tests help your doctor confirm a diagnosis of uremia. These tests are done to confirm if your blood contains high levels of waste products. They also used to evaluate your glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). This rate measures your kidney function.
Your doctor may also recommend a kidney ultrasound to check the shape and size of your kidneys, and see if they have any scars. An ultrasound also helps detect kidney blockages, such as injuries or kidney stones. In severe conditions, your doctor may recommend extra tests.
