How is bacterial vaginosis contracted?

The microbiome of bacteria that live in your vagina is diverse. BV is brought on by an alteration in the bacteria’s balance.
When “bad” bacteria (anaerobes) [2] develop more quickly than “good” bacteria (lactobacilli) [3], it results in bacterial vaginosis. An imbalance results from having too much of one kind of bacteria.
Researchers are aware that anything that alters the natural chemistry of your vagina can have an impact on the bacteria within. For this reason, some behaviors like douching or unprotected intercourse can result in BV. Hot tubs, pools, and toilet seats are not sources of BV. Additionally, contacting a surface that a person who has BV has touched won’t cause you to contract BV.
You might be wondering, is bacteria vaginosis contagious? Although it does not spread from person to person, sexual activity can increase your risk of getting the infection. You should also know that bacterial vaginosis is not sexually transmissible, despite being linked to sexual activity. Researchers think that sex may change the bacterial environment in your vagina. This increases the chances of bacterial overgrowth.
