Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What are the possible complications of BV?

It is not common for bacterial vaginosis to cause serious complications. But if left untreated it could lead to:

  • Complications during pregnancy: If you are pregnant and have BV, it may lead to premature birth.
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): BV increases your risk for STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia and gonorrhea. If you have HIV and develop BV, you’re likely to pass the virus to your partner.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) [6]: BV can cause PID, and infection of your reproductive organs. Untreated, PID can lead to difficulties getting pregnant.
