Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

How can I reduce the risks of BV?

There is little to nothing you can do to prevent bacterial vaginosis. However, following these safety measures could lessen your risk:

  • Do not douche: doing this alters the normal bacterial equilibrium in your vagina. Instead, take good care of your vulvar and vaginal areas.
  • Keep anything that has touched your anus out of contact with your vagina: Sex toys and toilet paper both have the potential to spread bacteria from your feces to your vagina. After each use, make sure to thoroughly clean sexual toys.
  • Do not have too many sex partners: According to research, if you have several sex partners, you run the risk of developing BV.
  • Wear cotton or cotton-lined underwear: Bacteria thrive in wet areas. Cotton helps wick away moisture.
  • Use latex condoms or dental dams: Although it’s unclear why, research indicates that sexual activity is associated with BV.

It is possible for one to have BV again, even after recovery. Up to 80% of people get bacterial vaginosis again in their lifetime. Which is why it is important to follow these methods to reduce the risk.
