Breast Abscess: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Causes of Breast Abscess

Research has shown that females with this condition may have previously had a breast infection called mastitis which was left untreated. The untreated mastitis allows for formation of sacs filled with pus to be found under the skin of the breast.

For non-lactating females, this medical condition may arise due to the presence of bacterial agents, such as S.aureus, staphylococcal and anaerobic bacteria in the mammary gland area. These infections are called sub areolar breast abscess. There are certain factors that lead to the development of these agents, such as:

  • Clogging of the milk duct.
  • Entrance through a cracked area of the nipple.
  • Entrance of foreign materials into the like piercings.

Apart from the causes listed above, there are also certain factors that may increase the risk of this infections in non-lactating females, like:

  • Smoking
  • Intake of excessive alcohol
  • Lack of proper personal hygiene.
