Catamenial (Menstrual-Linked) Epilepsy Overview

What Is Catamenial Epilepsy?

Catamenial epilepsy is a type of epilepsy that happens only to women. It is when they experience a seizure during their menstrual cycle. The seizures are caused by the fluctuations that occur in the hormones during the menstrual cycle as well as puberty, menopause, and pregnancy. Catamenial epilepsy can also be referred to as menstrual seizures or catamenial disorder.

Forty percent of people with catamenial epilepsy have been assigned a female at birth that has epilepsy. Out of these groups, the condition is more likely to occur in people who have started menstruating.
