Catamenial (Menstrual-Linked) Epilepsy Overview

Patterns of Catamenial Epilepsy

People who have catamenial epilepsy will experience a spike in symptoms during certain times. These changes can happen in different patterns such as:

  • Perimenstrual (C1): Premenstrual seizures occur just before or during your period. This is the first and most common pattern, referred to as catamenial type 1 or C1.
  • Periovulatory (C2): You may experience a spike in symptoms during ovulation, a periovulatory pattern. It’s also referred to as catamenial type 2 or C2.
  • Luteal phase (C3): This is the third possible pattern known as catamenial type 3 or C3. This is when the seizures worsen during the luteal phase. The luteal phase occurs in the second half of your cycle.
